What makes a CRM an AI CRM?
A CRM is a system of record: customers, contacts, jobs, communication history, documents and money. An AI CRM keeps all of that and adds a layer that can read the record, reason about it, and take permitted actions on it.
The practical difference is verbs. A CRM lets people record. An AI CRM lets software do.
What does an AI CRM actually do?
- Reads a customer's full history before responding to them.
- Drafts estimates, contracts and messages from real data instead of templates alone.
- Books, moves and confirms appointments within scheduling rules.
- Runs follow-up sequences and escalates when a human is needed.
- Writes back to the record so the next person sees what happened.
Why do so many products claim it?
Because the term has no enforcement. Many current implementations add a text box that summarizes emails or generates copy. That is genuinely useful, but it is an assistant sitting beside the CRM rather than an AI operating inside it.
A simple evaluation: ask the vendor to have their AI create a contract, send it for signature, and then invoice the job. The answer separates categories immediately.
